| The radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) that provides electrical
power to NASA’s historic New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Kuiper
Belt was installed on the spacecraft, while on the launch pad, using an
Alliance-designed and built installation cart. The cart combines
mechanisms, structures and system expertise to create a unique device that
smoothly facilitated the installation of the RTG onto the spacecraft from
the gantry platform just before launch. Both human and environmental safety
requirements had to be addressed through the development process. |
