This optical bench structure was produced by Alliance for the new-generation
satellites of the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite
System (NPOESS). The instrument delivers data on Earth’s atmosphere,
clouds, radiation budget, clear-air land and water surfaces, sea-surface
temperature, ocean color, and low-light visible imagery.
The Alliance Spacesystems optical bench is of aluminum honeycomb sandwich
construction (comprised of aluminum facesheets and core) used to achieve
a cost- effective yet high stiffness-to-weight design. The 0.7- by 1.0-
by 1.4-meter structure consists of multiple panels with more than 200 inserts
bonded to precision tolerances. It was designed and fabricated then
bonded in Alliance’s Class-100,000 bond facility in Pasadena. The
engineering model and first flight model have been delivered. |
